How to compress an image to 500KB
500 KB is already chosen for you. Just follow these steps.
- 1
Select your image — drop a JPG, PNG or WebP file into the box or click Select Image.
- 2
Keep 500 KB as the target and decide whether the tool may resize the image if needed.
- 3
Press Compress Image, check the before and after preview, then download your optimized file.
Why choose 500KB?
500 KB is the choice when quality matters. Phone photos are often 3–8 MB, which is too heavy for many uploads, but squeezing them to 50 or 100 KB can make them look soft. At 500 KB you cut the file size dramatically while keeping more detail, smoother gradients and — in most cases — the full original resolution.

How to keep better image quality at 500KB
Never resize image dimensions
Your image keeps its full width and height; only the compression level changes. At 500 KB this works for most photos and is the best way to keep maximum resolution.
Resize if needed to reach target size
Quality is adjusted first; the image is only scaled down if it still doesn't fit. Pick this for very large or detailed photos when staying under 500 KB is a must.
Tip: if your photo is much larger than the screen it will be viewed on, a slight resize rarely shows and frees more of the 500 KB for fine detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I compress an image to exactly 500KB?+
The tool looks for the best quality that still fits at or just under 500 KB, so the file usually lands a few kilobytes below the limit. That's what upload systems check for — a file of 500 KB or less is accepted.
Will compressing to 500KB reduce image quality?+
In most cases you won't notice a difference. 500 KB leaves plenty of room for detail, so photos keep their sharpness, texture and color. Only very high-resolution or highly detailed images need stronger compression — the before and after preview lets you check.
Are my images uploaded to a server?+
No. Compression happens inside your browser on your own device. Your image is never sent to us or anyone else, and nothing is saved.
What happens if my image cannot reach 500KB?+
This is rare at 500 KB, but it can happen with very large photos when 'Never resize image dimensions' is selected. You'll see a yellow notice with the smallest size we could create, and you can switch to 'Resize if needed to reach target size' or crop the image.
Should I resize the image to reach 500KB?+
Usually there's no need. Most photos fit 500 KB with quality adjustments alone, keeping their full resolution. Choose 'Resize if needed' only when a huge image still doesn't fit, or when the upload limit matters more than keeping the original width and height.
Need a smaller file? Try the 200KB image compressor, the 100KB image compressor or the 50KB image compressor. Need a different limit? Use the reduce image size in KB tool. Questions? Compress for upload · Contact us or read our privacy policy.
